Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need to activate my software?

Activation is used to help track the number of active users. It is also used to prevent other websites from passing the software off as their own. Users must visit the PlayIt Software website to activate the software.

How do I activate a product without an internet connection?

Each computer on which you install any PlayIt Software application needs to be activated. Each computer has a unique 'Machine Code' which is generated based on various hardware details about your computer.

To activate a product offline (e.g. PlayIt Recorder), you will need your computer name and machine code. These values can be found using the following method:

  • Download the PlayIt Recorder installer.
  • Install PlayIt Recorder on the computer on which you want to use it.
  • Run PlayIt Recorder from the start menu or desktop.
  • You will be asked to activate the software:
    • Click Activate Offline...
    • Make a note of the computer name and machine code.
  • On a computer with an internet connection visit:
  • You may need to log in, or create an account – this should not take more than a few minutes.
  • Select the product you are activating from the list.
  • Enter your computer name and machine code.
  • Click Generate Licence Key.
  • A licence will be generated for you:
    • Make note of your Client ID and Licence Key.
  • On the computer you are installing PlayIt Recorder, enter your Client ID and Licence Key.
  • Click the Activate button.
  • PlayIt Recorder will now launch.

Your licence key is valid for one year from the date of generation. After that, just generate a new licence and re-enter as above.

Can I try out beta versions of the software before they are officially released?

On each product page you can find a 'previous / beta versions' link that can be used to download new and upcoming beta versions to test or to rollback to a previous version. Visit the Products section to choose a product.

How do I back up my data?

It is recommended that you regularly back up your data to avoid unexpected data loss. Data and logs for PlayIt Software applications are stored in the Windows 'ProgramData' folder.

By default, on Windows Vista, 7 and 8, this is located at:

  • PlayIt Live: C:\ProgramData\PlayIt Live
  • PlayIt Recorder: C:\ProgramData\PlayIt Recorder

By default, on Windows XP, this is located at:

  • PlayIt Live: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\PlayIt Live
  • PlayIt Recorder: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\PlayIt Recorder

To back up your data, simply copy this folder to an alternative location, such as an external hard drive.

If you would like a new feature to be added to a PlayIt Software application, you can visit the dedicated Feature Requests section, where you can suggest the feature. Other users can vote in support of your feature request. Generally most popular features will be implemented first.
